2015 was a successful year for sailors using Etchells sails made by Peter McNeill from the Doyle Lake Macquarie loft and the excellent results have continued into 2016. The winners of five major Etchells regattas over the past year were using McNeill’s sails exclusively.
The team of Yandoo XX, skippered by Jeanne-Claude Strong, have had a tremendous run lately. They took out the prestigious 2015 Milson Silver Goblets on Sydney Harbour and then won the super competitive 2015 Australasian Winter Championship, held in the ocean off Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast.
J-C Strong and her crew have continued their good form into 2016, finishing 5th at this years Milson Goblets before getting on the podium at the 2016 NSW States on Lake Macquarie with a very close 3rd place overall result.
Peter McNeill and his crew in ‘Iris III’ won the 2015/16 Queensland State Championship, held by Southport Yacht Club on the offshore course at the Gold Coast. Peter then backed up this result with a win at the 2016 NSW State Championship recently held at his home club on Lake Macquarie.
Over in Perth, Brad Sheridan, Gary Smith and Brett Shoebridge, sailing ‘Tusk’, were victorious at the 2015/16 Syd Corser Regatta held on the Swan River. The ‘Syd Corser’ is one of two major regattas run by the Perth Etchells fleet each year.
All these winning boats were using the same sail designs for their mains, jibs and spinnakers, which have been developed by Peter McNeill, the 2004 Etchells World Champion, over many years competing in the class.
In a class that consistently attracts former world champions, Olympic medalists and America’s Cup winners, it would be hard to argue that these results are anything less than impressive.
Peter McNeill has more than 30 years of experience making Etchells sails as well as competing in the Etchells class. Anyone wishing to take advantage of this experience should contact Peter. He would be more than happy to share his knowledge with any sailors who are keen to improve their results.
